“The idea that some people matter less
is the root of all that is wrong with the world.”

Dr. Paul Farmer
(1959-2022)

Paul Farmer was unique. His impact on the hearts, minds and well-being of millions of people — from patients to presidents — was legendary.

As a co-founder of Partners In Health and professor at Harvard Medical School, Paul and his colleagues pioneered novel, community-based treatment strategies to revolutionize the delivery of high-quality health care in some of the poorest places on Earth. As a groundbreaking infectious disease doctor, he directly saved countless lives. As a renowned medical anthropologist, Paul wrote extensively on health, human rights, and the consequences of social inequality. And as an influential activist, he brought people together to change the world.

Over four decades, Paul dedicated his time and talent to furthering the field of global health and ensuring the right to health for all. Through his words and actions, he left behind lessons that continue to guide us today.

A Vision of Accompaniment

Paul believed that every human deserves access to high-quality, dignified health care. This mission requires — among many things — well-trained staff; proper and ample medications and supplies; health facilities with reliable space, electricity, and running water; and universally shared best practices. His methodology involved accompaniment, which means being in community with patients, together, for as long as it takes. Paul believed that any meaningful social progress is only born out of true solidarity and partnership, rooted in shared experiences and meant to support whomever needs assistance, for as long as they need it.

“With rare exceptions, all of your most important achievements on this planet will come from
working with others — or, in a word, partnership.”
