Paul’s Glade

Paul’s family decided that he should be laid to rest in a place that is both connected to his work and close to his heart: the University of Global Health Equity in Butaro, Rwanda, where he spent his final days teaching medical students. Paul served as the founding chancellor of UGHE and was dedicated to its long-term flourishing, believing that training the next generation of global health clinicians and leaders is an essential part of actualizing health care as a human right.

During his final years, Paul had proposed the nurturing of a natural forest glade as a core landscape feature in the heart of the UGHE campus. Inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy — among his favorite books — Paul envisioned the glade as both an open forest and a light-filled garden. He intended it to be a place for respite, reflection, and connection that would be open to all.

The glade will be a peaceful space filled with lush vegetation. An avid gardener, Paul believed in the profound importance of creating beautiful natural spaces at each of PIH’s care delivery sites, providing places of respite and comfort for patients as they heal. The glade at UGHE will include several species of plant life selected by Paul himself, including Redwood sequoias, araucaria, tree ferns, bromeliads, calla lilies, and fragrant roses and gardenias. A koi pond — another feature Paul often included at PIH’s clinical facilities — will include a pedestrian bridge and surrounding pathways.

Overlooking the pond will be a multidenominational chapel, providing a space for visitors to engage in reflection, prayer, or gathering with others. The chapel’s common space will fit up to 50 people and will include two small prayer/discussion rooms as well as restrooms.

Walking paths and numerous benches for rest and reflection will connect the chapel, pond, and other areas of the glade.

Paul’s Glade and mausoleum will be completed in 2025.
